The Gas Company

2,200 Hawaii Chefs Can’t Be Wrong: They’re Cooking with Gas! At Chai’s Island Bistro in Honolulu, Owner/Chef Chai Chaowasaree relies exclusively on gas to prepare his award-winning Contemporary Island and Pacific Rim fare. “Our special cuisine requires special energy — gas.” And Chef Chai is certainly not alone. One of the best uses of gas energy is for cooking, a fact that’s very much in evidence at more than 2,200 of Hawaii’s top restaurants. They choose clean, reliable, economical gas because the flexible flame of a gas range provides an infinite number of heat settings instantly, and offers the advantage of precise temperature control — a must for quality food preparation. The Gas Company has been in business since 1904 and has a workforce of 300 energy professionals who serve consumers, businesses and government operations throughout the state of Hawaii. TGC makes synthetic natural gas (SNG) at its plant on Oahu and supplies it through a 1,100-mile pipeline network to 28,000 commercial and residential utility customers. In addition, the company provides liquified petroleum gas (LPG or propane) to more than 40,000 utility and non-utility customers statewide. TGC is now developing technology to further reduce its carbon footprint by incorporating domestically produced, renewable alternatives to petroleum for its gas supply in Hawaii. The Gas Company serves every community on the six major Hawaiian Islands with low-cost, efficient, reliable gas energy for water heating, clothes drying, and, of course, for cooking!
